5 Days 4 Nights (5D4N) Travel Itinerary in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is the first place abroad that I have traveled to; but in that particular trip, what I mainly did was just eating and visiting the top tourists spot with my mama and unfortunately its during protest so we back hotel quite early.

But before I go on, I think it’s best that I give you a bit of information about visiting Hong Kong.

Best Month to Visit Hong Kong
Here’s what I think are the best and worst months to visit Hong Kong:

March - April and October - November: These are the best times of the year to visit Hong Kong. The spring time (March - April) sees cool evenings. The months of October and November are agreeable too. Pleasant breezes, perfect amount of sunshine and moderate temperatures are some things which make autumn an ideal time to visit the Island.

May - September: This is the typhoon season in Hong Kong and thus not a preferred time to travel to the Island. June to August is when the city tends to get very hot, wet and humid. The temperatures go beyond 31°C and the high humidity levels make it difficult for anyone to indulge in any outdoor activities.

December - February: Hong Kong is the coldest between December and February. It remains dry and cloudy during this time and the temperatures can drop below 10°C. Also, many shops remain closed during the Chinese New Year (mid-January to February, dates change annually).

How To Get To Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a big hub for traveling in East Asia so you will have plenty of option to fly into Hong Kong from where you are and you may get high speed railway train to HK if you traveling down from China (Guangzhou/Shen Zhen/etc) . I would recommend browsing through Skyscanner or Google Flight for cheapest flight or look for train discount voucher via klook or kkday.

How to Get to the City
I recommend taking the Airport Express to the city. It’s fast, convenient, and efficient. And I suggest that you buy tickets online. You can save up to 40% on Airport Express tickets if you buy them online as opposed to at the airport. That’s a money saving tip for you!

Of course, you can also take a taxi and make an economical sense provided you’re a group of 3 (or more).

Hotel Accommodation
Book your hotel in advance as hotel can be pricey if you book at last minutes — Tsim Sha Tsui, in downtown Hong Kong, is the most convenient base to stay for tourists. You can also find many excellent options in the areas of Central, Jordan, Mong Kok, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai. If you plan to stay in these areas, remember to choose a location within easy walking distance to an MTR train station.

Local Sim Card
When it comes to mobile networks, Hong Kong is really well connected. And in this day and age you definitely need mobile data for maps, navigation, and just uploading your stories on Instagram! You can pick up a SIM card easily at the airport upon arrival.

How to get around?
The best way to traveling around Hong Kong is to have their Octopus Card — a prepaid contactless debit card that can be used to pay for all kinds of public transport (except taxis and some red minibuses; and if I may add, this can even be used to pay at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, museums, and more).

You can purchase a normal Octopus card at any MTR station Information Centre, or a tourist version at the Hong Kong Airport that comes preloaded with HK$ 50 (more practical for visitors). The card can be topped-up at any MTR station, or convenience store such 7-Eleven or Circle K. And before you leave Hong Kong, you can choose to return the normal Octopus card to the information kiosk at any MTR station to get cash for any balance left on the card, and the deposit. Last I checked, you lose only HK$ 9 when you return the Octopus card. The tourist version of the Octopus card can’t be returned but serves as a souvenir of your trip to Hong Kong.

To better navigate yourself within Hong Kong, use Google Maps‘ directions feature (signified by a blue icon with an arrow inside it) — I really find it as a very helpful tool if I want to reach a certain place from a particular location. (However, Google Maps doesn’t work offline if you want routes or transportation schedules, so I recommend that you get a pocket WiFi or a SIM card to stay connected).
